Teaching Audiovisual Translation in Russian and Foreign Universities – Principles and Challenges

Audiovisual Translation deals with one of the primary sources of information for the millennials and the younger generation – films, series, videoblogs, games and visual news. Currently the world is in the middle of the cognitive revolution as the youth are much more integrated into social networks, gamification becomes a serious social phenomenon, most of the information is derived from visual sources and the experience and knowledge are stored in „clouds” that are easily accessed via high-speed Internet (reducing the need to research and replacing it with search skills). At the same time translation of AV productions is important for preserving both cultural identity and language of recipient cultures and countries. To respond to all these challenges, we developed several University curricula involving theoretical research, practice and such instruments as VR demonstrations and interlingual respeaking software as well as the use of translation memory tools for glossary management. Our courses were validated also by corporate customers at Blizzard (France) and Broadcast Text International (Sweden).
