Comparing Hungarian Translator Training Institutions: A Swot-Analysis And Beyond

In the framework of an Erasmus+ strategic partnership project entitled ‘eTransFair’ (launched in September 2016 and running until 2019), a SWOT-analysis was conducted with the involvement of 12 Hungarian translator training institutions. The first part of the paper will summarise the findings of the study and will attempt to compare the results with those of other surveys [a SWOT involving EMT universities – carried out by the Austrian partner (UniVie) in eTransFair -, also some relevant findings of the CIUTI 2014 Survey and the EMT Surveys, as well as the latest EUATC Language Industry Survey] to put the national results into an international perspective  and also including an attempt to shed some light on the role of research in translation curricula. The second part of the paper will introduce some other results of the eTransFair project: a new competence model for specialised translators, a newly designed transferable training scheme, a set of e-modules (on entrepreneurship, project management, localisation, terminology and revision) and a pool of assessment techniques (PAT) to be compiled by teachers and translators across Europe and channelled into an online methodology portal. Although the topic of research is not a priority in the project, the paper is hoping to provide ample ammunition to demonstrate how bridges can be built between the translation market and translator training institutions in the tertiary sector.
