The use of CAT tools in translation training

Melinda Dabis, PhD, Pazmany Peter Catholic University

The use of CAT-tools is an essential part of a translator’s work, and therefore it is imperative that any student of translation training is not only familiar with them, but able to use CAT-tools confidently. However, from the aspect of translation training, it is a more complex issue. When students start to use CAT-tools in class, a decrease of quality can be observed in their translation. What problems can arise and how can they be tackled? At what stage of the training should CAT-tools be introduced? The presentation summarizes the findings and questions of a research in progress seeking to identify typical mistakes and problems when students start using CAT-tools for translation, and how they cope with the different work environment.
