Call for Papers:

Translator and interpreter training is typically a matter of practice around the globe—
otherwise people would never be able to learn the basics of either job. By contrast, translation
research is by definition abstract even when looking at practice—otherwise it makes little
sense. In sum, the two activities are diametrically opposed yet related to each other; but in what ways? Anyway, is this link logical, necessary or indispensable? If yes, should it be one-way or interactive? Is translator training possible without translation research? Should training include the results, methods, problems, attitudes and histories of basic research or its applications, or something completely different? Should future translators (and interpreters) learn the possible research methods, at least at a basic level? If so, are there any professional arguments for this other than saying that this is a compulsory course? Is translator training responsible for teaching the translation scholars of the future? How can these two fields help each other?
Should anyone who is not a scholar teach translation research? Should anyone who is not a
translator teach translator trainees? There is no end to such questions but the conference will
hopefully provide answers to some of them.

  • Translating languages of limited diffusion – state of the art and perspectives (Nataša Pavlovic and Boguslawa Whyatt)
  • Comparing experiences and systems: translator training at graduate and postgraduate levels (John Milton)
